Third generation grower/shipper/packer with corporate offices in Salinas, California is adding to its very busy accounting team.  This family owned forwardly integrated and diversified industry leader is accepting resumes for immediate consideration for the position of Accounting Manager.  This is a full-time salaried opportunity eligible for a robust benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance as well as paid time off and an excellent work environment.


The Accounting Manager, Operations, will manage the accounting functions within the Production, Harvesting and Cooling/Shipping Departments under supervision from the Vice President Operations and Operations Controller.  Day to day activities require the use of initiative and judgment, particularly when prioritizing work or working with multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities to include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Supervision of any staff accountant(s) and/or accounting clerk(s) assigned to Operations Accounting
  • Manage all aspects of the monthly general ledger closings related to inventory, commodity cost allocations, growing cost accruals, indirect allocations and ranch/block terminations
  • Manage the maintenance of inventory for seed, carton and packing supplies, fertilizer and chemicals
  • Oversee the management systems supporting Grower Accounting including:
    • Ensuring accurate annual reconciliation and analysis of grower deals
    • Ensuring prompt payment of contract payments
    • Accurate calculation of net returns, etc. with proper documentation
    • Maintenance of grower contract management system
  • Review processes and develop plans for improvement where needed
  • Accounting related support for Harvesting and Production Departments
  • Oversee the coding and input for inventory invoices into the A/P module
  • Analysis of material efficiencies, inventory control and purchasing
  • Responsible for maintenance of the costing system
  • Responsible for the continued development of the item costing system
  • Analysis of commodity financial reporting and being prepared to support any material variations
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining the annual calculation of the indirect allocations for the Harvesting, Production and Cooling/Shipping Departments
  • Develop and maintain rigorous documentation standards to ensure ongoing knowledge and transfer of knowledge of all business critical operations applications and processes
  • Maintaining an open flow of related communication with both operations and accounting
  • Responsible for keeping the Vice President Operations Controller abreast of all operations accounting functions
  • Participate in the annual audit
  • Participate in special projects as needed

Successful candidate will be able to perform the above-noted responsibilities as well as have knowledge of:

  • Basic general accounting practices
  • Strong knowledge of inventory and cost accounting practices
  • Auditing practices
  • Great Plains eEnterprise knowledge a plus
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel and Word

Further, will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 5+ years applicable work experience with a strong knowledge of inventory and cost accounting practices
  • Excellent customer service skills on the phone and in person
  • Excellent verbal and written business communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Team player who works well with a variety of people with a minimum of supervision
  • Solid problem solving skills with a methodical approach
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment and handle pressure while managing multiple tasks
  • Valid driver’s license and clean record
