Amazing opportunity to join a rapidly expanding and innovative fresh vegetable grower/shipper and be a leader in their farming operation.  This third generation family-owned employer and client is hiring for the position of Farm Operations Manager reporting to the Director of Farm Operations based out of Morgan Hill, California.  There will be travel to various growing locations in California and Oregon but no relocation during winter growing season.  This is a full time position eligible for excellent benefits package! This role will have direct oversight of the day to day field operations, long term planning of a large modern farming operation, and will require to meet both short and long term crop growing goals.  On this employer’s behalf, we are accepting resumes immediately for consideration.

Job Specific Duties & Responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Irrigation Department
    • Facilitates communication between Director of Farm Operations and Lead Irrigator
    • Works with the Lead Irrigator and will ensure correct irrigation schedules are being followed
    • Ensures irrigation schedules match the activities on the Farm Plan
    • Reports activities daily to Director of Farm Operations
  • Tractor Operations Department
    • Facilitates communication between Director of Farm Operations and Tractor Foremen
    • Works with the Tractor Foremen to schedule equipment and operators for Items on the Farm Plan
    • Ensures the equipment related activities on the Farm Plan are completed safely and efficiently on or ahead of schedule
    • Performs proper implement adjustments to maximize efficiency
    • Oversees transportation of equipment
      • Ensures all equipment is moved safely and as efficiently as possible
  • Pre-Planting
    • Consults with Director of Farm Operations to determine what ground prep activities and deadlines are needed on a field by field basis
    • Schedules equipment and operator(s) for all ground prep and pre planting activities
    • Ensures ground prep deadlines are met so plantings can occur as scheduled as possible
    • Works with Lead Irrigator and Tractor Foremen to ensure that equipment and irrigations are coordinated
  • Planting
    • Schedules equipment and operator(s) for all plantings
    • Works with Director of Farm Operations to make sure that all plantings use the varieties and spacing called for on the planting schedule.
  • Growing
    • Schedules equipment and drivers
      • Creates revolving 3 week schedule for all on farm field activities
      • Consults with Director of Farm Operations on plant needs with regard to fertigation and spraying
      • Monitors tractor tasks to ensure all activities on the Farm Plan are completed
  • Harvest Equipment
    • Ensures proper use of harvest equipment
      • Works with Row Crop Manager to maintain safe and efficient operation.
      • Reports any major repairs to the Shop and/or Equipment Department.
      • Performs minor repairs/adjustments on site as needed on a case by case basis.
  • Year Round
    • Takes inventory of all inputs, organic and conventional, no less than once a month
    • Communicates with the shop foreman and the Financial and Planning Manager to ensure equipment is fixed in order of priority and on budget.
    • Monitors employees in both the Irrigation and Tractor departments
      • Approves and schedules shifts including overtime
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities
    • Ensures all persons involved in tasks while on Company facilities follow Standard Operating Procedures for the safe and efficient completion of all activities
    • Maintains consistent communication with senior management on present/future trends of availability and cost of materials and components
    • Ensures that all field activities listed above are reported to the Crop Production office in a timely manner so that they can be recorded in the Farm Journal and if necessary reported to the relevant agencies
    • Maintains a clean and safe work environment that promotes work safety and product integrity.
    • Follows all Safety, HACCP & GMP requirements at all times.

Successful candidate with have the ability as well as experience to perform the above duties and responsibilities.  Additionally will have the following qualifications:

  • PAL (Private applicators License).  If not already certified, will be willing and able to obtain.
  • Clean driving record
  • Class C driver’s license
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • A minimum of five years farm management experience required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with irrigation and planting schedules.
  • Knowledge of and experience with various farm equipment.
  • Willing to be flexible to accommodate changing business conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced work environment.
