SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Project Engineer shall have the
responsibility of converting a Custom Equipment Sales Order in to a functioning engineered system which
encompasses all or part of the design, build, installation and start-up process.
As a member of the engineering team, the Project Engineer will support the profit goals of the HMI by placing those
goals foremost when interacting with others at all levels. The Project Engineer will build an environment that fosters
teamwork and enhanced task accomplishment through communication and coordination with co-workers of other
departments on items such as safety standards; quality control standards; product and line development;
coordination of engineering, production and project schedules and promoting the image of HMI as a leader in the
industry.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
SALES ORDER REVIEW/HAND-OFF MEETING

  • Review the sales order for accuracy of individual machine and process descriptions, identify and resolve
    any issues.
    Review the individual equipment budgets and identify and resolve any issues.
    Review the process flow, products to be run and identify and resolve any issues.
  • Check the initial sales layout for accuracy in both plan and elevation and identify and resolve any issues.
    Publish hand-off meeting notes, identify and establish the project team, ‘cc’ all team members on allRequest Change Orders from Sales to insure the accuracy of the Sales Order.
  • Review OEM equipment, determine who is ordering.
    Review the Controls process, motor list, vendor quotes, identify and resolve any issues.
    Review production engineering time line and identify critical release dates.
    Request 2nd, 3rd…. hand off meetings as required to keep the project on track.
    Inform the engineering manager of any issues the will prevent the project from keeping on schedule.
    II) POST SALE APPLICATION ENGINEERING
    a) After the Sale the project engineer shall update and resolve all layout issues and resolve any applicationb) The project engineer shall complete any application layouts required during the course of the project that
    may generate a change order against the existing sales order
    c) The project engineer shall provide sufficient information for the Sales Application to estimate any new
    equipment and adjust the Sales Order as required.
    III) SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
    a) Finalize the layout in both plan and elevation views, obtain accurate blocks of all equipment.
    b) Interface with outside vendors to insure system integration and functionality.
    c) Develop the motor list and process control logic, manage the vendor, and locate the panels for efficient
    process operation.
    d) Develop accurate machine specifications to drive the mechanical design process.
    e) Review and initial each Shop Release Package for detail accuracy, design standards, and budget
    variances.

    IV) MECHANICAL DESIGN
    a) Responsible for the completion or hand-off and management of the mechanical design process (reference
    the Mechanical Designer job description for complete detail)
    b) Project engineer to designer hand-off process, determine how much definition the assembly needs based
    on the available designer
    c) Form Fit Function Blocks, ensure the most accurate block is part of the process
    d) Design drawing process, ensure the generated work meets the standards of HMI
    e) Design Capabilities, Obtain the required information for a successful project
    V) INSTALLATION
    a) Develop accurate and “usable” install drawings
    b) Develop an understanding of the install process and sequence to provide drawings that represent the
    process
    c) Identify and discuss critical areas of the equipment installation with the install crews
    d) Develop and maintain good working relations with install personnel and follow up on completed jobs for
    feedback from install crew
    VI) PROJECT MANAGEMENT
    a) Monitor Mechanical design hours for each job, to ensure total job hours are within budget.
    b) Coordinate and manage sub-contracted fabrication, electrical, and other outside contractors as assigned.
    c) Review the production schedule weekly to ensure release dates are met and logged on the schedule.
    d) Follow the progress of the job in fabrication and assembly by periodically inspecting the work in the shop
    e) Check status for purchased components as the project approaches assembly
    f) Check in with the assembly department to insure the machine is being assembled to specifications
    VII) PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, ELECTRONIC DESIGN GUIDES
    a) Utilize existing EDG and binders to develop equipment per existing design standards.
    b) Function as the product line manager for HMI standards as assigned by the engineering manager
    c) Route completed shop release package through the product line manager for final review and approval
    VIII) ADMINISTRATIVE
    a) Complete Time Cards and allocate time to the correct Job Number.
    b) Keep Flex time schedule updated and inform engineering manager of any changes
    IX) OTHER
    a) Manage and archive data related to the Engineering Department.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Engineering or equivalent from four-year college or certificate program with

major course work in engineering; and at least three years demonstrated related experience and/or training;

or equivalent combination of the two.

  • Two years experience in mechanical design field, and project engineering/management job responsibilities.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Must have excellent PC skills, including intermediate experience with Microsoft Word, advanced experience

with Microsoft Excel and mechanically designed software programs. Must have the ability to quickly learn

specific software.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret Engineering specific journals and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively and tactfully present information to, and communicate

with management staff, employees, regulatory agencies and others.

  • Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including accurate grammar and business

correspondence knowledge.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to work with standard units of measurement, for distance, weight and volume. Working knowledge of

basic algebra.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only

limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram,

or schedule form.
